Conversation starters for “Date Night”

When I am at restaurants with my hubby, I look around and am always amazed that the majority of couples look like they are sitting silently and eating with very little conversation.

I think that with the craziness of life sometimes our marriages need a little bit of “help” with staying connected and having conversations that aren’t centered around the kids or daily chaos, but are helpful to building a better friendship with our spouses.

Conversation Starters

Where do you want to see yourself in the next 6 months?

This is such a great question for both of us to answer.  Dreaming together is so important.  We usually talk about where we see ourselves in our jobs, marriage, spiritual journey and as parents.

These conversations are usually more focused on dreaming together and assessing the areas of our lives that we would like to grow in.

Talking about our goals helps us pursue them and stay focused.

What is the next place you want to visit if money was no object?

This is such a fun conversation to have! We talk about places we would like to go as a family or for our anniversary.  We share why we like these places and what we look forward to experiencing there.

I always want to go to tropical places for vacations but, my husband likes places like Rome, China and more culturally enriched experiences so it’s fun to see how we are different in ways we thought we were the same… even after 11 years there are always new things to learn about your spouse.

If there is one thing I could work on in our marriage to bless you, what would it be?

This is not a “fight starter.”  This is meant to be a light conversation.  That is why you pick ONE thing rather than tell your spouse the list of things you believe they need to change. LOL

We usually don’t make it super deep either, just an easy answer of what would be a blessing to work on.

For example, things like: Being more thoughtful, surprise gifts, praying more together, having time to talk uninterrupted every night, having some media free time, sending daily texts, or just being more affectionate when you are together.

What can I specifically pray for you about this week?

This is Big and shouldn’t only be asked on a date night.  It is so important to be each others number one cheerleader and pray for each other.

You may be the only one praying for your spouse that day and many times they are fighting battles they may not even tell you.  So, never hesitate to cover them in prayer.

Name 3 things on your bucket list?

What are 3 things you would like to do or experiences you would like to have.  You may think you know your spouse super well but, you may be surprised by the their answers.

My husband wants to go sky diving but I hate heights, so our lists are very different.

I know things I may have said 5 years ago are very different from my perspective now.  We all change so, it’s great to ask these type of questions.

These questions can start such fun conversations to keep you both engaged and deepening your relationship and friendship with one another.  Try some of these on your next date night and watch how they actually bring more intimacy and closeness in your marriage.  So many times we just need to let all the stress go and just be ourselves and talk about the fun things that life brings.

Love this list! My husband and I always have a hard time with conversation on date nights. We end up looking at our phones and not having any meaningful conversation! I’ll have to remember these next date night. Thanks for sharing!

I loved this post Jehava. It’s so important for couples to continue “dating”. It’s also a lot of fun! There will ALWAYS be new things to learn about your mate – even after 10, 15, or 20 years of marriage. These are great questions that encourage both parties to keep exploring one another. Great job!

Yes, sometimes we get so used to each other and forget there are always new things to learn!

I love the prayer question so much!! I am definitely going to add that to my resolutions. In this crazy, busy world, we can let that prayer go to the wayside. What a great, easy way to bring it back into marriage!

Yes! To us, that is the most important one! That’s great!

So true! It’s crazy when you’re at a restaurant and you see people not talking or just on their phones. Sometimes I want to lean over and say, so are you guys texting each other? Great conversation starters, good thing, my hubby and I are never short on words.

These are great convo starters! I hate when I go out and see couples that look like they would rather be anywhere but eating with each other. Or when both people are staring at their phones instead of talking to each other. I will definitely have to use these convo starters on many date nights to come!

I have to admit, on the rare occasion that my husband and I get to go out to eat together, we are often one of those couples that looks like they have nothing to talk about. I think a big part of it is utter exhaustion and I’m so used to being around kids all day sometimes I forget how to talk to another adult, lol! But I love these ideas, I think the trip one and the bucket list ones are really fun, and asking what we can specifically pray for is a great one.

December 27, 2016

Thanks so much! I think we all have those nights but I hope this helps! Thanks for sharing!

December 28, 2016

I love this! I pulled out some conversation starters like this on my phone one time with my husband and he looked at me like I was crazy but two hours later we were deep in one of the most real (non-kid) related convos we’ve had in what felt like forever.

Such a great idea!

December 28, 2016

LOL! I know you have to just memorize a few so they don’t think you are off the wall! That’s so great!

December 28, 2016

Awesome list! I totally agree prayer is so important in a marriage. Prayer definitely changes things.

December 28, 2016

Yes! Prayer is the key to keeping our marriage together! Thanks!

December 28, 2016

These are great ideas! So important to share ideas and thoughts that DON’T involve the kids!

December 29, 2016

I am very glad you wrote about this! My marriage really needs a little help in this period, as we were very busy taking care of our son and forgot to take care of our relationship. I plan to change that in 2017, so your post was a perfect inspiration!

December 29, 2016

Aww this makes me so happy! It is definitely a challenge with kids to keep it a priority but totally possible!

December 29, 2016

I feel like ever since having kids, when we FINALLY get to have a date night, we find ourselves talking about the kids! It can be hard to think of other things sometimes, so this list is great!

December 29, 2016

I am with ya girl! We have to force ourselves as well to talk about things like this!
